Electricity trading on Croatia’s CROPEX exchange reached 1.512 TWh in August. The figure was up 6.9% from July and 27.4% compared with the same month a year earlier. Wholesale prices also increased sharply over the period.
Day-ahead and intraday volumes
Turnover on the day-ahead market accounted for 1.041 TWh. The intraday market handled an additional 471,421 MWh. Average daily day-ahead volume stood at approximately 33,571 MWh.
Baseload and peak price movements
The average day-ahead baseload price rose to €151.63/MWh. That represented a 27.5% increase month on month. Average euro-peak prices reached €124.38/MWh, up 43%.
Intraday pricing also moved higher, with the average intraday price increasing by 29.7% to €153.96/MWh. Day-ahead and intraday turnover both rose alongside the price increases reported for August.
Market activity amid regional volatility and renewables
The higher turnover and prices indicate stronger wholesale market activity entering the late-summer period. At the same time, the broader Southeast European region saw increasingly volatile hourly price formation.
Intraday trading growth was described as becoming more relevant as Croatia adds variable renewable generation. That development increases the need for market participants to rebalance portfolios closer to physical delivery.
CROPEX market structure and cross-border coupling
CROPEX operates both day-ahead and intraday markets. It is integrated with neighbouring European markets through Croatia’s cross-border market coupling arrangements.
