HUPX September day-ahead baseload price rises 17.5% as volumes ease

Hungarian electricity exchange HUPX reported a 17.5% increase in its September day-ahead baseload price. Traded volumes declined versus August, while remaining above year-earlier levels. The exchange’s monthly pricing and turnover figures show the shift in both price and liquidity during the month.

September price levels for baseload and peak power

The monthly baseload average reached €178.73/MWh, compared with €152.17/MWh in August. The peak-load average rose 17.2% to €144.31/MWh. The difference between peak and baseload resulted in a €34.42/MWh discount of peak-load to baseload electricity.

That spread reflects how the timing of electricity consumption can affect what buyers pay relative to a monthly baseload benchmark. A monthly baseload figure does not capture the price paid when demand is concentrated in specific hours. The same distinction can influence generator revenues when output aligns with lower-priced periods.

Turnover and intraday trading volumes on HUPX

Day-ahead turnover totalled approximately 2.47 TWh. This compared with 2.92 TWh in August and 2.21 TWh in September 2025. Intraday continuous trading reached 1.261 TWh, down 3.4% month on month.

During September, HUPX had 132 registered day-ahead members and 130 intraday continuous members. These membership figures accompanied the lower month-on-month intraday volume while overall activity remained above year-earlier levels.

Cost base entering October after September’s rise

The increase in September lifted the cost base entering October. By 9 October, the Hungarian day-ahead average had reached €269.43/MWh. The figure indicates how quickly daily supply pressures can raise procurement costs above an already elevated monthly benchmark.
