Electricity traded on North Macedonia’s MEMO day-ahead exchange increased 74% year on year to 179.2 GWh in September. The rise coincided with higher September prices, according to exchange data. This points to increased activity within the organised market.
September volumes and month-on-month price movement
Total traded volume fell 10.3% from August, even as market pricing moved higher. The average clearing price rose 10% month on month to €150.49/MWh. Average daily trading reached approximately 5,973 MWh.
The peak-period average was reported at €121.40/MWh. This figure was below the overall monthly average of €150.49/MWh. Delivery hours therefore affected the relationship between peak and monthly pricing.
Exchange scale since launch and comparison with September a year earlier
The exchange was launched in May 2023. It is handling substantially more electricity than a year earlier, when September trading totalled approximately 102.9 GWh. The comparison indicates a larger market footprint versus the same month in the prior year.
Higher annual turnover suggests greater market depth, while the monthly decline from August shows activity remains variable. For participants, September combined higher trading volumes than a year earlier with a higher average procurement price than in August. The difference between peak-period and overall prices reflected variation across delivery hours.
The gap between peak-period and overall prices also shows that monthly baseload averages alone do not fully describe exposure. The timing of consumption and production remains material to realised costs and returns.
