Romania hits record solar output of 2,952 MW on 19 June

On 19 June, dispatchable solar power plants in Romania reached a new peak of 2,952 MW at 12:33 PM, exceeding the previous high of 2,690 MW. At the time, total electricity generation was about 6,020 MW, while network consumption was around 4,100 MW. Solar generation covered nearly 72% of domestic network demand, excluding electricity produced by prosumers.

Transelectrica estimated prosumer output at roughly 1,930 MW between noon and 1 PM. Adding residential and commercial prosumer generation brought Romania’s total solar production close to 5,000 MW during the peak period. The figures indicate that solar output is playing a major role in shaping the country’s electricity balance.

Solar output reshapes Romania’s daily power balance

The June record reflects a shift in how Romania’s power system is assessed within Southeast Europe. Historically, the system has been evaluated through hydro, nuclear, coal and gas generation and through cross-border exchanges with Hungary and Bulgaria. With solar capacity now at levels that affect the daily market curve, midday conditions can differ sharply from evening hours.

During periods of strong irradiation, Romania can generate export surpluses and influence regional electricity price formation. As solar production declines rapidly later in the day, system stress can reappear in the evening. At that point, balancing needs increase for resources such as hydro, gas, imports, batteries and demand response.

At the time of the peak solar output, Romania was exporting approximately 2,200 MW to neighbouring markets. This level of outflow shows how quickly the market can move from balanced conditions to short-term surplus exports. It also points to operational challenges linked to managing large volumes of variable renewable generation.

June record achieved with limited hydro and nuclear availability

The record was reached under specific system conditions. Hydropower production remained below 1,000 MW, and one nuclear reactor was unavailable. Solar output therefore contributed significantly to maintaining hourly power balance rather than operating alongside abundant dispatchable supply.

The combination of high midday solar availability and reduced evening support increases reliance on flexible capacity. Grid operators and market participants face a pattern where midday electricity becomes more abundant while evening reliability depends more heavily on controllable and flexible resources. This affects how traders plan intraday positions and how investors assess future grid needs.

Solar-plus-storage pipeline expands across Romania

Romania’s project pipeline indicates that the change is expected to continue beyond current operating levels. Energy developer Enery and technology company LONGi announced cooperation on a 1.5 GW solar and storage portfolio planned for implementation between 2026 and 2027. The largest project in the portfolio is Ogrezeni.

Ogrezeni is expected to include a 761 MW solar plant paired with more than 1 GWh of battery storage. Hybrid configurations like this reflect an investment approach focused on shifting generation into different market periods rather than producing only during daylight hours.

A similar pattern appears in smaller projects. Alive Capital’s Nanov hybrid facility combines 26 MW of solar capacity with 5 MW / 10.67 MWh of battery storage. A planned solar project at Iasi Airport includes 4.42 MW of photovoltaic capacity with 4.73 MWh of storage.

Batteries integrated with wind and broader infrastructure plans

Batteries are also being integrated alongside other renewable assets. Engie is incorporating battery solutions with its Baleni wind farm. Electrica is developing storage as part of a broader infrastructure strategy.

This expansion is expected to affect regional power flows as well as domestic balancing requirements. Countries including Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Moldova are set to experience impacts from Romanian midday surpluses through cross-border flows and regional price formation.

Even as exports rise during high-solar periods, Romania will continue to require balancing support during evening hours when solar output declines but demand remains elevated. The combination of export-driven price pressure at midday and flexibility needs later in the day shapes how regional markets respond to Romanian generation profiles.

Project design increasingly tied to flexibility needs

The investment focus extends beyond solar module size toward combinations that include grid access and storage capability. Projects are also expected to rely on accurate forecasting, trading capabilities and reliable offtake structures for managing variable generation profiles.

The June milestone also aligns with a broader operational shift described through timing and controllability requirements for renewables. Romania’s record-level solar production is therefore linked to changes in how market participants manage daily supply patterns as penetration increases.
