Electricity trading on Croatia’s CROPEX recorded higher prices in September even as volumes were lower than in August. The exchange reported that activity remained above year-earlier levels, alongside a decline in monthly turnover. The figures indicate changes in both pricing and traded quantities across the market.
September trading volumes and market split
Total traded electricity reached 1.364 TWh, down 9.9% month on month. Compared with September 2025, traded volumes were up 25%. Within that total, the day-ahead market accounted for 902.8 GWh, while intraday trading reached 461.1 GWh.
Average daily day-ahead turnover was approximately 30.1 GWh. This breakdown shows the distribution of September volumes between day-ahead and intraday sessions. The monthly totals were lower than in August but higher than in the same month of the previous year.
Day-ahead and intraday price movements
The average day-ahead baseload price increased by 14% to €172.80/MWh. The peak-load average rose by 15.7% to €143.86/MWh. Peak-load electricity was approximately €28.94/MWh cheaper than baseload.
The intraday market averaged €175.40/MWh, which was slightly above the day-ahead baseload level. The price spread between peak-load and baseload remained consistent with the reported difference for September. These figures reflect variations across product types and trading timeframes.
CROPEX ownership and market timeline
CROPEX is jointly owned by transmission system operator HOPS and electricity market operator HROTE. The day-ahead market began operating in 2016. Intraday trading started in 2017, followed by coupling through the Croatian-Slovenian border in 2018.
September’s results show continued growth in exchange activity compared with last year, while monthly turnover was lower than in August. Prices increased alongside reduced trading volume, distinguishing between liquidity levels and the cost of securing electricity through wholesale trading. The reported metrics cover both quantity and pricing outcomes for the month.
