ALPEX reported continued growth in organized electricity trading in June 2026, with total day-ahead market volumes reaching 197.2 GWh. The figure was 2.8% lower than May levels, while remaining 45.4% higher year on year. Trading activity therefore continued to expand on an annual basis between the two markets.
Volumes split across Albania and Kosovo bidding zones
Day-ahead volumes were recorded in both ALPEX bidding zones, with 108.7 GWh traded in the Kosovo zone and 136.1 GWh in the Albania zone. Both zones cleared at the same average price level of €91.55/MWh. The matching clearing price across zones was reflected in the reported market results for the month.
The exchange also reported a total transaction value of approximately €32.5 million for June 2026. This was up by 10% compared with the same month of the previous year. The figures were associated with higher participation and increased trading activity on the centralized platform.
Exchange established by OST and KOSTT
ALPEX was established in October 2020 through cooperation between Albania’s transmission system operator OST and Kosovo’s transmission operator KOSTT. The exchange was set up to support development of a more efficient and competitive regional electricity market. Its first day-ahead auction for the Albanian bidding zone began in April 2023.
Registered participants and role as renewables expand
The exchange includes 36 registered market participants operating across the Albania and Kosovo bidding zones. As renewable-energy capacity expands and cross-border electricity flows become more important, ALPEX is expected to take on a larger role in regional market functioning. The reported focus includes improving transparency, investment signals, and trading efficiency across Southeast Europe.
