Market activity on the Albanian electricity exchange is continuing to build momentum, with February 2026 day-ahead trading reaching 197.44 GWh, according to ALPEX reporting. The figure marks a 5.6% increase versus January 2026 and a much larger 138.6% uplift compared with February 2025, pointing to stronger short-term liquidity in the regional power market. For developers and grid stakeholders, these dynamics matter because day-ahead price formation and traded volumes influence revenue expectations, dispatch planning, and the operational assumptions behind renewable integration.
Day-ahead volumes expand in both bidding zones
ALPEX data shows that of the total 197.44 GWh traded in February, 123.6 GWh was transacted in the Kosovo bidding zone and 126.7 GWh in the Albania bidding zone. The split highlights that activity is not confined to a single market area, which can affect how balancing needs are managed and how inter-zonal flows are scheduled. It also provides an observable reference point for utilities and industrial offtakers assessing how quickly market participation is scaling.
Prices remain differentiated between Albania and Kosovo
The average market clearing price in Albania stood at 58.87 euros/MWh, while Kosovo recorded 61.17 euros/MWh during the same month. Across ALPEX overall, the average price reached 60.02 euros/MWh in February. Such spreads are relevant for project finance and contract structuring because they shape expected cash flows for generation assets connected to these bidding zones, including wind and solar portfolios that rely on market-based revenues.
Transaction value falls despite higher throughput
Even with higher traded volumes, the total value of transactions executed on ALPEX in February was approximately 23.1 million euros. This represented a 13.5% decrease compared with the same period last year, indicating that price levels or trade composition did not move in line with volume growth. For operators preparing dispatch strategies—particularly those coordinating variable renewables with battery energy storage systems—this combination of volume growth and value contraction can influence operational optimization targets.
ALPEX governance and market participation
ALPEX was established in October 2020 by the Albanian electricity transmission system operator OST together with its Kosovo counterpart KOSTT. The exchange conducted its first auction for the Albanian market in April 2023 and currently counts 36 members participating across both the Albania and Kosovo bidding zones. As participation broadens, it can support more robust market signals that developers use when planning grid connection timing, EPC preparation milestones, and investment phasing for new generation and storage.
Looking beyond trading statistics, stronger day-ahead activity can feed into broader industry readiness by improving visibility for dispatch planning and market-based revenue forecasting. For utilities, contractors, investors, and industrial stakeholders working on transmission modernization and renewable buildouts, the February results underscore how regional power-market liquidity continues to evolve alongside infrastructure development needs.
