In the week of May 11, electricity demand rose across most major European power markets versus the previous week. Germany and Italy recorded the largest increases, with demand up 7.3% and 6.6%, respectively. Belgium saw the smallest rise at 1.0%, while France, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Spain posted moderate gains ranging from 2.5% in France to 3.5% in Spain.
Temperature changes support higher consumption
Average temperatures mostly fell during the same period across Europe, supporting higher electricity use. France recorded the biggest temperature drop at 2.0°C. Great Britain and Belgium saw smaller decreases of 1.7°C each.
The Iberian Peninsula also experienced cooler conditions, with temperatures down 1.8°C in Spain and 1.9°C in Portugal. Germany and Italy were an exception to the general trend, with temperature increases of 0.4°C and 0.9°C, respectively.
Post-holiday activity and weather drive demand
The increase in electricity demand was linked to a rebound in normal business activity after the May 1 public holiday, International Workers’ Day. That holiday had temporarily suppressed consumption in the prior week. Cooler weather conditions in many regions also supported higher energy usage.
AleaSoft forecasts for demand direction into mid-May
Forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting indicate that during the week of May 11, demand is expected to rise further in France, Spain, and Italy. By contrast, declines are projected for Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Portugal.
AleaSoft also cited national holidays that may temporarily reduce consumption levels in several markets. Ascension Thursday on May 14, observed in Germany, Belgium and France, is expected to affect demand during that period.
