Contract for new trading and clearing system
ALPEX, the Albanian electricity exchange, has awarded a contract valued at around €3 million for a new digital power trading and clearing platform. The exchange said the award followed a competitive tender process. The project is part of an upgrade of ALPEX market infrastructure.
ALPEX selected a Greek-led consortium to deliver the new system. The platform is intended to support market operations through electronic trading and clearing functions.
Consortium roles and platform capabilities
The winning consortium is led by ATHEX and includes the Hellenic Energy Exchange and Enex Clear. The group will design, deploy, and operate a modern electronic platform for electricity trading. Coverage includes both day-ahead and intraday products.
ALPEX said the new system will fully replace existing solutions. The exchange also cited faster execution, low-latency performance, and secure anonymous trading among market participants.
Linking regional markets with European coupling mechanisms
The platform will link the Kosovo and Albanian electricity markets with Europe’s core trading frameworks. This includes enabling participation in the Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC) and Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC) mechanisms.
ALPEX described the linkage as a step toward deeper regional and European market integration through participation in the coupling frameworks.
Implementation timeline and exchange background
Project implementation is planned to last up to 54 months. ALPEX said the schedule reflects the technical scale and complexity of integrating national markets into broader European systems.
ALPEX was established in October 2020 by transmission system operators OST and KOSTT. The exchange was created to support development of a joint and more competitive power market between Albania and Kosovo.
