Italian day-ahead pricing and regional benchmark role
Italy held its position as Southeast Europe’s premium electricity price benchmark during May 2026, according to Electricity.Trade’s latest regional trading review. The Italian day-ahead average price fell by 0.10% from April to €119.35/MWh. Despite the month-on-month decline, the level was 27.54% higher than in May 2025. Price stability continued even as neighbouring markets saw significant movements.
IPEX liquidity and implications for forward trading
Italy also remained the region’s largest and most liquid electricity market. Trading volumes on the IPEX exchange reached 22,994.12 GWh in May. That represented a 4.54% increase month on month and an 8.30% rise year on year. Liquidity levels continued to influence forward market expectations and cross-border trading strategies.
Generation mix, demand growth, and net import position
Italy’s generation mix in May comprised 41.61% renewables, 34.07% natural gas, and 16.24% hydropower, with 17.97% net electricity imports. Renewable output rose by 9.22%, while hydropower generation increased by 12.45%. Electricity demand expanded by 3.29% during the month. Italy remained a major net importer, bringing in 3,706.01 GWh, though net imports were down 16.41% versus April.
Cross-border flows with Central Europe and the Balkans
Cross-border trade remained central to Italy’s market activity in May 2026. Imports came primarily from France, Switzerland, Austria, and Montenegro. Exports were directed to Greece, Malta, and Slovenia. Improved renewable generation reduced import requirements, while gas-dependent generation continued to link prices to fuel market fluctuations.
Regional price range above €100/MWh
The May 2026 pricing picture showed no new surge driving Italy’s position as a premium market. With prices remaining stable at a high level, Italy continued to act as a key pricing reference point for regional electricity spreads. Several neighbouring Southeast European markets also traded above €100/MWh. Italy retained the highest price range and continued to serve as a reference market for regional arbitrage opportunities.
