HUPX August day-ahead prices jump 24% as volumes rise

Hungary’s power trading benchmark, HUPX, reported higher day-ahead electricity prices in August alongside increased trading activity. Day-ahead prices in the Hungarian market rose sharply during the month. At the same time, volumes increased compared with both the previous month and the same period a year earlier.

Baseload and peak prices on the HUPX day-ahead market

The average HUPX day-ahead baseload price reached €152.17/MWh. This was up 24.4% from €122.35/MWh in July. The reported average peak price increased by 37.6% to €123.17/MWh.

Day-ahead traded volumes and intraday turnover

Day-ahead traded volume reached 2.92 TWh in August. That represented a rise of 15.5% from 2.52 TWh in July and an increase of 13.6% from 2.57 TWh in August 2025. Intraday continuous-market turnover reached almost 1.31 TWh, up 0.9% month on month.

Market participation on HUPX

In August, HUPX recorded 133 registered day-ahead members, three more than in July. The intraday continuous-market had 130 members during the same period. Higher turnover together with sharply higher baseload prices coincided with the tighter conditions affecting the Hungarian market during August.

Continued growth in participation and traded volumes also supported HUPX’s position as a core price reference for Southeast European power trading.
